Email Marketing 101 – Step 1: Create a Gift

The most common gift is a written article shared as a PDF file.

  1. Create the content in Microsoft Word (or something similar) and save it as a PDF file.
  2. If you have a WordPress website, upload the PDF file to your media directory in WordPress.
  3. Copy the URL where the PDF file is stored. Save for later.

Email Marketing 101 – Step 2: Set Up an Email Account

Set up an account with an Email Service Provider (like AWeber, GetResponse, MailChimp, and others).

Email Marketing 101 – Step 3: Create Email List

  1. Create the email list.
    1. Determine which fields will be required and optional.
  2. Specify if the list will be single or double opt-in.
    1. Lists are normally set to double opt-in, by default.
  3. If you choose double opt-in:
    1. Personalize the confirmation email.
    2. Specify the URL a subscriber will be sent to after they click the confirmation link in the email.
      1. You’ll create this page in a later step, but specify the URL now.

NOTE: For single opt-in lists, the download page URL will be specified when you create the opt-in form for the landing page (step 4b).

Email Marketing 101 – Step 4: Build a Landing Page

  1. Create a web page offering the gift.
    1. Specify the benefits they’ll receive from the gift.
  2. Add a 1-step or 2-step opt-in form to the page and link it to the email list.
    1. Add those fields to the opt-in form you want to collect (email address, name, etc.)
    2. Specify the page the subscriber will be sent to after then enter their information and click the send button.
      1. For single opt-in lists, this will be the download page.
      2. For double opt-in lists, this will be the confirmation page.
  3. Include a privacy statement below the button assuring your readers you won’t share their email with others.
    1. Example: “I respect your privacy and will not share your email.”

Email Marketing 101 – Step 5: Build a Confirmation Page (Only for Double Opt-In Lists)

  1. Create a web page providing clear instructions on how to confirm their subscription.
    1. Check your email
    2. Open message with subject line: …
    3. Click the confirmation link

Email Marketing 101 – Step 6: Build a Download Page

  1. Create a web page thanking them for subscribing and advising them to click the button to download their gift.
    1. Include a button link they can click on to download their gift. Add the URL for the PDF as the link (see step #1).
    2. Consider adding instructions for saving the file.

You may also want to include a video introducing yourself to build the relationship further.

You can also offer your new subscribers a paid product (usually one of your lower priced products or services).
